Summer Term - Amazing Abertridwr

Spring Term - Watery World

As we come to the end of the year, Summer Term is all about embracing their independence skills, having high expectations for all and nurturing their differences. We continue to develop their independence skills as they approach Year 1.

The children continue to complete more Branching Out Challenges independently throughout the week alongside their teacher lead tasks which will encompass more elements of independence. The 6 Areas of Learning and Experience are still developed using specific tasks, alongside Branching Out Areas and Challenges, which use the Froebelian principles of learning through play and learning opportunities.

In Language Literacy and Communication, we still focus on learning letter sounds and letter formation in handwriting sessions, building words using their phonic sounds and writing tricky words within sentences.

We continue to look at and read lots of different stories and retell them using Pie Corbett story maps and actions, alongside retelling both verbally and through writing, as well as researching facts in non-fiction books and writing fact files about lots of different topics.

In Maths and Numeracy, we focus on counting to 20, zoning in on teen numbers, building and using bonds to 10, counting in 2s and 10s and using money to buy and pay for items.

In Health and Well-Being, our Jigsaw Units are "Relationships" and "Changing Me"

In PE, we focus on athletics and games in preparation for Sports Day.

In Humanities we learn all about our amazing community and village, Abertridwr, the shops and businesses in the local area and the jobs that people do to help us. We discuss what we would like to be when we grow up, and invite various people in to talk to children about the jobs that they do.

We also focus on our homes, the differences between all of our homes and what our homes look like. We talk about how homse are different all over the world and what 'home' means to them.

Alongside this, we look at diversity and how everyone is different and learn about how it is important to respect everybody's differences.

In Science and Technology, we learn all about mini beasts, focusing on caterpillars and butterflies. We are lucky enough to experience having caterpillars in the class. We learn about the life cycle of a caterpillar by watching them grow and turn into butterflies. We research facts about caterpillars and butterflies using books and search engines so we know how to look after them and release them into the trees when they are butterflies.

Alongside butterflies and caterpillars, we learn about different mini beasts and their features.

During Expressive Arts, we focus on film and drama. We learn how to create short animations on Puppet Pals as a team, creating stories using different characters. We explore drama using fairy tales and short stories by acting as characters from these.
