Welcome to Dosbarth Pedwar!

Our topic for Summer Term is Tomorrow’s World.

LLC

Year 4 have an exciting term ahead in LLC, packed with creativity, teamwork and imagination! As part of their instructional writing topic, the children will explore birds and investigate different types of bird feeders. They will design and create three different feeders before writing clear instructions explaining how to make one of them. Later in the term, pupils will develop their descriptive writing skills through film reviews. They will watch a range of mini films, explore examples of reviews and learn how to express opinions using exciting vocabulary and detailed descriptions. To finish the year, the class will dive into the world of playscripts. They will learn how scripts are structured before creating their own advert script for their enterprise project. This topic will give the children the opportunity to build confidence in speaking, writing and performing while having lots of fun along the way.

Maths

This term, Year 4 will continue developing their mathematical confidence through a range of practical and engaging topics. Pupils will explore fractions by comparing, ordering and learning how fractions relate to everyday life. In shape, the children will investigate symmetry and the properties of 2D and 3D shapes through hands-on activities and problem-solving challenges. During our time topic, pupils will practise reading analogue and digital clocks, converting between units of time and solving real-life time problems. The class will also focus on money, where they will add, subtract and calculate amounts using pounds and pence. This learning will link closely to our enterprise project, giving pupils the opportunity to apply their maths skills in real-life situations such as budgeting, pricing and calculating change.

Humanities

This year, Year 4 will become young entrepreneurs through an exciting enterprise project focused on helping birds and wildlife. The children will design, create and sell their own bird feeders, learning about the importance of caring for the environment and supporting local wildlife. As part of the project, pupils will carry out market research to explore popular styles, materials and prices before deciding how to create products that customers will enjoy. They will use their maths, communication and teamwork skills to help plan and promote their ideas ready for the Enterprise Fair at the end of the year. Alongside this, Year 4 will also explore different careers and discuss the skills and qualifications needed for a variety of jobs. We are looking forward to welcoming guest visitors into school to speak about their careers and experiences, helping to inspire the children as they begin thinking about their own future ambitions and aspirations.

Science

This term, Year 4 will explore the fascinating world of science through the topics of living things, birds and habitats. The children will investigate the differences between living and non-living things and learn how animals adapt to survive in their environments. A key focus will be birds, where pupils will study different types of beaks and discover how they are linked to food sources and survival. Through practical investigations, the children will explore the idea of natural selection and answer the question, “Can all birds fly?” by researching a variety of bird species from around the world. Year 4 will also celebrate the life and work of David Attenborough as he turns 100, learning how his documentaries have inspired people to care for the planet. The class will also investigate ways to help local protected birds and other wildlife, encouraging children to become thoughtful and responsible caretakers of the environment

Technology

This term, Year 4 will develop their technology skills through exciting creative and coding projects. The children will learn how to use iMovie to plan, film and edit their own adverts for the enterprise project. They will explore how to add music, transitions, text and sound effects to create engaging videos that promote their bird feeders. Alongside this, pupils will continue developing their coding skills by creating and debugging simple programs. They will learn how to use algorithms, repetition and logical thinking to solve problems and complete challenges. These activities will help build creativity, confidence and important digital skills for the future.

RVE

This term, Year 4 will learn about Islam and explore the importance of the Five Pillars. The children will discover how these beliefs guide the daily lives of Muslims around the world. Through discussions and activities, pupils will develop respect, understanding and appreciation of different faiths and cultures.

Health and Wellbeing

This term, Year 4 will focus on teamwork through a variety of exciting P.E activities. The children will practise skills for Sports Day, including baton relay races, skipping and running events. They will work on improving speed, coordination and teamwork while building confidence and resilience. Pupils will also develop their bat and ball skills through fun games and challenges that encourage control, accuracy and communication. These activities will help children stay active, healthy and motivated while enjoying physical activity with their classmates.

PE will be on a Friday, so please could the children wear suitable footwear.

We aim to read with the children twice a week and if you would like to see their reading record or listen to them read the book they are currently reading in school, please ask them to bring it home and ensure it is back in school the following day. We are encouraging independent reading, therefore the children always have their reading book on their desk to read in the mornings and after lunch.

You can see what Year 4 are getting up to with daily Seesaw posts.
