Autumn -'Remember, Remember – Senghenydd Disaster'.

We will be focusing on a historical enquiry focussing on Governance. We will be looking at the the history of mining, how safety laws helped prevent further devastation. We will find out about life in the village at the time of the disaster. We will be writing flashback stories looking at the novel ‘The Darkest Day’ imagining we are in Senghenydd at the time of the disaster. This text enables the children to gain understanding of life in the valley at the time of the explosion. We will also link the changes in child labour laws and the rights of children to discursive text writing. We are focusing our understanding of the value of a digit is related to its position. We are working to read, record and interpret numbers, using figures and words up to at least one million.  We are also focusing on using the four operations of calculation to solve problems. In Science we are focusing on coal as a resource, how it was formed, used and the effects of coal mining and its use on the environment. We will be exploring line drawing and painting landscapes with a focus on the works and style of Peter Pendergast.

Spring Term - Blue Planet

Pupils will be caring, concerned citizens by investigating the dangers to the oceans and seas of the world and find ways to help. We will look at issues in Wales and the world beyond. In science we will investigate buoyancy as a force and magnetism. We will be writing a Welsh legend and a Welsh themed poem for the Eisteddfod. Look out for our Eisteddfod showcase. We will create instructional leaflets and apply these to our topic work. In maths we will explore decimals and fractions so it will be great to work on our times tables to help. We will be exploring the use of movement and stillness in dance, creating our own dance sequences.

Summer Term - Tomorrow's World

This term we will be focussing on our future selves, which careers we would like and how to achieve them. We will have guest speakers come and talk to us about their jobs and learning paths. In literacy we will be looking at persuasive writing in adverts, protest songs and speeches. We will discuss the importance of making good health choices for a better future. In science we will look at the best conditions for plant growth and will be growing our own vegetables. Our studies will look at how to save money and keep records for budgeting. In teams we will engage in a business enterprise, researching, designing and making products to sell, keeping track of profit and loss. Bring your cash to our market place and see what we have made!
