Ysgrifennu (writing)

The Ysgrifennu (writing) area in the Year 1 classroom encourages children to build on their early writing skills by forming letters correctly, writing words with increasing accuracy, and beginning to construct full sentences with meaning and purpose.

This area includes open-ended tasks and subject-specific writing challenges, which help to develop independence and confidence in writing across different contexts.

The aim of the Ysgrifennu area is to promote independent writing by encouraging children to make use of word banks, sound mats, handwriting guides, and a range of writing tools. Children are supported to think for themselves, solve problems, and make choices about how to present their ideas using the resources provided.

Children are also encouraged to use the Bump It Up Wall, which supports them in identifying steps for improvement and setting personal writing goals. This visual tool helps them reflect on their own work and strive for their next step in writing.

When a Branching Out Challenge is introduced, a WAGOLL (What A Good One Looks Like) is shared to support the children. They can copy, adapt, or innovate on the model depending on the level of challenge they set for themselves. Completed work is then uploaded to SeeSaw, where families can view and celebrate the writing their child has produced.
