Cwmaber Infant & Junior Schools

Creative Station

Within the Creative Area, Year 1 children are encouraged to explore, experiment, and express their ideas creatively using a wide variety of open-ended materials. This space supports children in developing their imagination and creativity as they plan, make, and evaluate their own artistic projects.

The area also fosters a range of key skills, including fine motor development, problem solving, teamwork, turn-taking, independence, and curiosity. Children are encouraged to take ownership of the space by organising materials, sorting colours, sharpening pencils, and checking equipment such as felt tips — building responsibility and self-management.

The Creative Area reflects the Froebelian principle of 'learning by doing', placing value on open-ended, hands-on experiences that allow children to develop confidence and express individuality through art and design.

From time to time, a Branching Out Challenge is introduced, often linked to a topic or key skill. A WAGOLL (What A Good One Looks Like) is displayed to support children in understanding the expectations. They are encouraged to interpret, adapt, or extend the example using the materials provided, depending on the challenge they choose for themselves.

Completed work is uploaded to SeeSaw, where families can view and celebrate their child’s creativity and progression from home.
