Our Year 1 classroom includes a thoughtfully designed Nurture Nook and Cornel Darllen (Reading Corner) – a calm, welcoming space that supports both emotional well-being and a growing love of reading.

As a nurture-accredited school, we recognise the continued importance of emotional security and belonging as children progress through the early stages of school life. The Nurture Nook offers a quiet retreat where children can take time to regulate their emotions, reflect, and reset. It encourages children to begin recognising and managing their feelings more independently, while still feeling supported and safe within the classroom environment.

Linked closely with this is our Cornel Darllen, which offers a rich selection of high-quality, age-appropriate books. This space helps develop key reading behaviours such as fluency, comprehension, and expression, as well as promoting a deep enjoyment of storytelling and books. Children are encouraged to read independently, in pairs, or in small groups, and can revisit familiar texts or explore new genres and authors.

Whether used for quiet reading, group story time, or emotional regulation, both the Nurture Nook and Cornel Darllen are essential to our holistic approach to learning — supporting children not just academically, but emotionally and socially as well.
