Numeracy

In Dosbarth Un, we focus a lot on Maths and Numeracy skills and implement these throughout our curriculum.
We use a range of mathematical strategies and programmes, such as TAPAS, White Rose, and Conkers.

Our numeracy focuses in Dosbarth Un are:

Autumn

Place Value

  • Partition teen numbers (e.g. 17 = 10 + 7)
  • Read and write numbers to 20
  • Order and compare numbers to 20 (in 1s, 2s, 5s)
  • Find 1/2 more or less to 20
  • Count objects reliably up to 20

Addition and Subtraction

  • Know number bonds of 4 and 5
  • Partition and recombine 6–9, anchoring on 5
  • Use visual aids (numicon, coins, fingers) to show number facts
  • Explore doubles to 10 using practical resources
  • Connect doubling and halving
  • Add two groups to at least 10 (using visible/hidden counters)
  • Subtract within 10 (using visible/hidden collections)
  • Use +, –, and = symbols correctly

Money

  • Find totals to 10p using two items
  • Use different coin combinations to make totals (e.g. 8p = 5p + 1p + 1p + 1p)
  • Give change from 10p

Number Sequences

  • Count in 1s to 50, 10s to 100, 5s to 20 (forward/backward)
  • Copy, make and continue repeating patterns

Time

  • Talk about time during the day
  • Use language for days, months, seasons
  • Read o’clock on analogue clocks

Measuring

  • Measure using non-standard units
  • Estimate length, height and distance

2D Shapes

  • Recognise and name common 2D shapes
  • Create and spot symmetrical shapes

Position and Movement

  • Describe position, direction, and movement

Statistics

  • Sort using 2 criteria (e.g. Venn diagrams)
  • Collect and represent data using pictures or objects
Spring

Place Value

  • Partition 2-digit numbers (e.g. 46 = 4 tens + 6 ones)
  • Read and write numbers to at least 20 correctly
  • Count objects to 20 by anchoring on 10 (e.g. 10 + 4)
  • Compare, order, and estimate numbers to 20

Addition and Subtraction

  • Recall number bonds to 10 using songs and resources
  • Recall doubles and halves to 10
  • Use counting on/back strategies to solve problems within 20
  • Add/subtract 10 using partitioning (e.g. 10 + 3 = 13)

Money

  • Pay up to 20p using different coin combinations, anchoring on 10p

Multiplication and Division

  • Use early multiplication language when making equal groups
  • Explore doubling (e.g. same number of spots on both wings)
  • Use early division and halving when sharing into two groups

Number Sequences

  • Recite numbers to 100 (forward/backward/from different points)
  • Count in 2s to 20
  • Continue complex repeating patterns (shapes, sounds, movement)

Time

  • Use time language daily (days, months, seasons)
  • Read o’clock on digital clocks

Measuring

  • Measure weight/mass with non-standard units
  • Estimate weight sensibly

3D Shapes

  • Name and recognise 3D shapes (cube, cuboid, cone, sphere)
  • Begin comparing and sorting them

  • Make and describe whole and half turns
Summer

Place Value

  • Understand place value in teen numbers
  • Use bead bar to link money (10p and 1p coins)
  • Position numbers to 50 on number lines
  • Order number cards within 50 (smallest to largest)
  • Read/write numbers beyond 20 and number words to 10

Addition and Subtraction

  • Recall number bonds to 10
  • Learn doubles beyond 5 and near doubles (e.g. 4+5 from 4+4)
  • Make addition/subtraction links using number bonds (e.g. 9–2=7)
  • Solve one-step and missing number problems (e.g. 6 + ? = 10)

Money

  • Add prices to 20p using number facts
  • Find change within 10p using subtraction

Multiplication and Division

  • Make equal groups and link to repeated addition (e.g. 5 groups of 2)

Number Sequences

  • Count to 100 forwards/backwards from any number
  • Count in 2s, 5s, 10s using coins and rhythm
  • Say next or previous 1–3 numbers in a sequence

Time

  • Use time language daily (days, months, seasons)
  • Match times to daily events (e.g. 3 o’clock = home time)

Measuring

  • Measure capacity using non-standard units
  • Estimate capacity sensibly

Temperature

  • Use terms like warmer/cooler in context

Shapes

  • Use and describe 2D and 3D shapes and how they fit together

Fractions

  • Use halving in real-life routines (e.g. cut in half, fold in half)

Statistics

  • Interpret simple tables and graphs (e.g. tally charts, pictograms)
